End-to-end algorithm for hierarchical area searches for long-duration GW sources for GEO 600
We describe a hierarchical, highly parallel computer algorithm to perform
searches for unknown sources of continuous gravitational waves -- spinning
neutron stars in the Galaxy -- over wide areas of the sky and wide frequency
bandwidths. We optimize the algorithm for an observing period of 4 months and
an available computing power of 20 Gflops, in a search for neutron stars
resembling millisecond pulsars. We show that, if we restrict the search to the
galactic plane, the method will detect any star whose signal is stronger than
15 times the noise level of a detector over that search period. Since
on grounds of confidence the minimum identifiable signal should be about 10
times noise, our algorithm does only 50% worse than this and runs on a computer
with achievable processing speed.Comment: 7 pages, for proceedings of Jan 1999 Moriond meeting "Gravitational

Una finestra su: Amsterdam
Amsterdam è in una fase di delicata
transizione. L’articolo propone e affronta
una lettura critica di quattro temi
chiave: la diversificazione della struttura
demografica e socio-economica, la
liberalizzazione della politica abitativa,
l’approccio organico dello sviluppo
urbano e la governance metropolitana.
Oggi la città di Amsterdam è più
etnicamente e socialmente frammentata
che mai. La geografia sociale mostra
una crescente diversificazione tra centro
e periferia che sottolinea importanti
asimmetrie economiche e culturali.
Stanno avvenendo anche cambiamenti
nella tradizione degli interventi su larga
scala e della pianificazione pubblica:
in tempi di austerità , gli interventi
urbani sono infatti prevalentemente su
piccola scala ed orientati a stimolare
imprenditorialità in determinate aree
urbane e spesso legate a sperimentazioni
Searching for continuous gravitational wave signals: the hierarchical Hough transform algorithm
It is well known that matched filtering techniques cannot be applied for
searching extensive parameter space volumes for continuous gravitational wave
signals. This is the reason why alternative strategies are being pursued.
Hierarchical strategies are best at investigating a large parameter space when
there exist computational power constraints. Algorithms of this kind are being
implemented by all the groups that are developing software for analyzing the
data of the gravitational wave detectors that will come online in the next
years. In this talk we will report about the hierarchical Hough transform
method that the GEO 600 data analysis team at the Albert Einstein Institute is
developing. The three step hierarchical algorithm has been described elsewhere.
In this talk we will focus on some of the implementational aspects we are
currently concerned with.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure. To appear in the proceedings of the conference

Phase diagram of QCD with two degenerate staggered quarks
We present preliminary results about the critical line of QCD with two
degenerate staggered quarks at nonzero temperature and chemical potential,
obtained by the method of analytic continuation. As in our previous studies
with different numbers of colors and flavors, we find deviations from a simple
quadratic dependence on the chemical potential. We comment on the shape of the
critical line at real chemical potential and give an estimate of the curvature
of the critical line, both for quark chemical potential and isospin chemical
potential.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, talk presented at Lattice 2011, The XXIX

The critical line of two-flavor QCD at finite isospin or baryon densities from imaginary chemical potentials
We determine the (pseudo)critical lines of QCD with two degenerate staggered
fermions at nonzero temperature and quark or isospin density, in the region of
imaginary chemical potentials; analytic continuation is then used to prolongate
to the region of real chemical potentials. We obtain an accurate determination
of the curvatures at zero chemical potential, quantifying the deviation between
the case of finite quark and of finite isospin chemical potential. Deviations
from a quadratic dependence of the pseudocritical lines on the chemical
potential are clearly seen in both cases: we try different extrapolations and,
for the case of nonzero isospin chemical potential, confront them with the
results of direct Monte Carlo simulations. Finally we find that, as for the
finite quark density case, an imaginary isospin chemical potential can
strengthen the transition till turning it into strong first order.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, 4 table
